Job interview in Germany (Vorstellungsgespräch)

German interviews are structured and fairly direct. If you know the usual order and a few phrases, you can concentrate on content instead of language.

How a typical interview runs

  1. Small talk and introductions (5 minutes).
  2. The company introduces itself and the job.
  3. You present yourself (“Erzählen Sie etwas über sich”).
  4. Questions about experience, skills and motivation.
  5. Practical questions: start date, salary, notice period.
  6. Your questions.
  7. Next steps.

Be on time (5–10 minutes early), use “Sie” until you are offered “du”, and bring your application documents.

Introducing yourself in 2 minutes

Use a simple structure: current situation → relevant experience → why this job.

Typical questions

  • “Warum haben Sie sich bei uns beworben?”
  • “Was sind Ihre Stärken und Schwächen?” – name a real weakness and what you do about it.
  • “Erzählen Sie von einer schwierigen Situation bei der Arbeit.” – answer with situation, task, action, result.
  • “Wo sehen Sie sich in fünf Jahren?”
  • “Warum möchten Sie Ihre aktuelle Stelle wechseln?” – stay positive about your former employer.
  • “Wie gut ist Ihr Deutsch?” – give your level honestly (e.g. B2) and mention your course or certificate.

Salary and start date

Name a gross annual salary range based on research (e.g. on the Federal Employment Agency's “Entgeltatlas”): “Ich stelle mir ein Jahresgehalt zwischen 48.000 und 52.000 € brutto vor.” For the start date mention your notice period: “Ich habe eine Kündigungsfrist von einem Monat und könnte zum 1. Februar beginnen.”

Questions that are not allowed

Under the German anti-discrimination law (AGG) employers may not ask about pregnancy or family planning, religion, political views, sexual orientation or health in general. You do not have to answer such questions.

Your questions

  • “Wie sieht ein typischer Arbeitstag aus?”
  • “Wie läuft die Einarbeitung ab?”
  • “Wie groß ist das Team?”
  • “Welche Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten gibt es?”
  • “Wie geht es nach dem Gespräch weiter?”

Video interviews and follow-up

For video interviews test camera, microphone and internet beforehand, choose a quiet room and a neutral background. Afterwards a short thank-you email the same or next day is a good idea: “Vielen Dank für das freundliche Gespräch. Ich bin weiterhin sehr an der Stelle interessiert.”

How long does an interview take?
